Iain Masson - tutor

Iain Masson was born in Dundee, 1981 and grew up in the Scottish golf town of Carnoustie.

 

At the age of 16, Iain was appointed Resident Pianist with the Swallow Hotel Group playing at the Swallow Hotel Dundee, both in the 150-seater Italian Garden Restaurant and the converted Greystanes House, performing for diners and international clientele.

 

In demand for his varied and popular easy listening repertoire, he added Wigmore's Restaurant, Wine Bar and Bistro to his portfolio aged 17 playing in the famous seaside town of Broughty Ferry.

 

He was given a new role at Bar Epernay Champagne Piano Bar as a weekday shift pianist in 2003 before becoming principal Friday and Saturday night solo pianist in the Mailbox, on a revolving canalside podium entertaining drinkers and diners.

 

He has played for chef Brian Turner, as well as entertaining, by memory, international delegations, hospitality chiefs, playing for corporate functions and events, charity banquets and professional sports teams and their staff, supporters, and sponsors.

 

Iain has played at the five star international Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews, overlooking the famous links golf courses and the West Sands Beach and at Oscars French Steakhouse and Bistro in Leamington Spa.

 

On occasion, he has performed at Le Grand Café in Évian-les-Bains in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.

 

In 2004, Iain played piano as part of regional coverage of the Chancellor's Pre-budget Report broadcast live from Bar Epernay in the Mailbox, Birmingham on BBC One, presented by Adrian Chiles.

 

Iain has performed freelance for weddings and ceremonies in country mansions and private estates around the UK, in addition to accompanying school choirs, shows and performances. His compositions have been played live on BBC Radio 3.

 

Prizes include the RNCM 2005 Alan Rawsthorne Composition Prize, the Evelyn Forbes Ruark Memorial Scholarship for Solo Piano Performance, the Dr. and Mrs. William Christie Piano Trio Rosebowl, the Miss K.H. McLauchlan Cup for Piano Performance and the Dr. Kenneth Browne Memorial Award for Citizenship.

 

Iain has a BMus(Hons) from Birmingham Conservatoire and a PGDip with Merit in Composition from the Royal Northern College of Music where his principal teachers were John Mayer and Adam Gorb respectively. His music has been played in venues including the Bridgewater Hall, Hall One, King's Place London, Brighton Corn Exchange, The Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, Kungliga Operan and BBC Broadcasting House London.

 

In 2015, he was conferred with Honorary Membership of Birmingham Conservatoire (now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) HonRBC for services to the music profession in the ten years following graduation.
