About me
Iain says:
"I have always had a huge passion for music education and playing piano. I first started to teach neighbours how to play piano when I was 14 or 15 years old, and have continued to adore teaching ever since!
My first piano teacher was Maureen Rutherford who guided me through my early years on the instrument. At the age of 16, I got my first piano job as the Resident Pianist of the Swallow Hotel Dundee in Scotland performing to international clientele in their 120-seater Italian Garden Restaurant, and a year later I joined Wigmore's Wine Bar, Restaurant and Bistro in Broughty Ferry playing on their honky tonk piano. At 21, I became a Resident Pianist of Bar Epernay in the Mailbox, Birmingham, becoming their principal pianist at 25 on Friday and Saturday nights.
No prior playing experience is necessary to have lessons with me, and any age can learn! I teach classical piano from first note up to grade 8, and I coach pop and rock styles too. With an undergraduate degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Composition from Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music, I am well-placed to teach composition too.
Prizes I have won include the Dr. and Mrs William Christie Rosebowl, the Miss K. H. McLauchlan Cup and the Evelyn Forbes Ruark Memorial Scholarship for piano performance, and the RNCM Alan Rawsthorne Composition Prize. I have Grade 8 in classical Piano (ABRSM), which I completed in 1998, coached by Kathleen Renilson. I teach over 65 piano students in the West Midlands and online from age 4 upwards - and I love my job! I also play the tuba as a former member of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland, and I can teach valved brass.
I am proud to be an Honorary Member of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (HonRBC) and a Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and Singers (FGMS) in London.
I am a member of the ISM with my own public liability insurance. I am enhanced DBS-checked and updated with the latest safeguarding training. I can show my certificate on request."
